do what you love

I entered the fitness industry late on – aged 36. I left behind a career in financial services as I had read that all successful people did something that they loved – then it didn’t feel like work.

I loved health and fitness and so naturally thought that this was the sensible thing to do.

My first few months were amazing. I was free from silly financial compliance, pension consultations and boring sales meetings. I was doing what I really loved and inspiring others to become fitter and healthier. I was broke, but I knew if I kept doing what I was doing the money would follow.

After about 12 months, I started to get a bit bored. Probably something to do with the early 5am starts and late finishes.

Things had slowed down regarding the business growth and  I was feeling a bit burnt out.

I needed a break. So I got hold of a friend of mine that was a Personal Trainer and asked him to look after the business while I went to France on holiday for 10 days.

It didn’t go well. We lost a load of clients and I was getting really stressed out by the whole thing. It totally ruined the rest of the holiday.

This was not part of my original vision. I thought that by doing something that I loved, the money would effortlessly follow and life would be great.

It was around this time that I revisited the reasons WHY I wanted my business to be such a success. WHY did I want to be such a success. WHY did I want to earn ‘x’ amount of money every month?

For the record, here are my main reasons (in no particular order):

  • I want to send my son Harrison to a private school that has an emphasis on sport
  • Want to be mortgage free
  • Pay my Mother and Father in law back money that I borrowed from them 10 years ago
  • Take my whole family (parents, brother, sister, niece, nephew, wife, kids) on an all inclusive 2 week luxury holiday to Beaches in Caribbean.
  • Live somewhere warmer
  • Help thousands of women to get in shape and stay healthy
  • House overlooking the sea
  • Buy a Bentley
  • Take my son to a World Cup Final
  • Inspire and coach others to achieve their goals

Just writing out this list gets me fired up. It makes me want to jump on the phone and start following up leads so that I get one step closer to achieving my WHYs.  This list invokes Passion. And Passion is what is going to help get you results.

It’s unlikely you’re going to get rich and have free time on your hands to spend with your family if you try to convince yourself that “doing what I love is all that matters and will help me reach all my goals”

Just plodding along helping a few clients at any one time isn’t going to change the World and leave a legacy. This is why I now offer group training, semi private, and one to one with nearly 200 clients now.  This is why I produced an online home workout programme that has been sold all over the World. This is why I have now started a Personal Trainer coaching programme with members in America and Australia as well as the UK.

This has all been achieved since getting back from that disaster holiday in France, taking a step back from my business and getting crystal clear on WHY I do what I do. I realised that in order for me to achieve those goals I had to do less of the training (the part that I really enjoyed) and focus more on sales, product development, marketing, consultations, coaching etc. It turns out that I absolutely love all of this stuff as well.

Do you sometimes struggle getting motivated?

Are you fed up with clients letting you down?

Are you sick of not earning what your friends earn?

Do you wish you could take more time off?

If you have answered yes, then this proves the point that just doing something that you love isn’t enough.

Write down your WHY list.  Why do you want to change your current situation? Why are you prepared to work so hard to achieve this?

Once you have the answers to these questions, list them in your phone and keep them on you at all times. Remind yourself daily.

Then you need to start taking action and figuring out the HOW.
