Here’s another cool little lesson that I’ve learnt over time.
In fact this is something that gets left out of a lot of success story testimonials and ‘How To’ success books…..
The road to business growth and success is a real rocky one, and you had better be prepared for as many (if not more) bad days than good ones!
Deep down, you know this though…..as you are witness to it every day with your own clients.
Everyone loves a quick win or a fast result.
Everyone loves a rags to riches story. The idea that someone can be ‘rock bottom’ and then come through that, turn their life around and a few years later end up super successful. A good example of this would be my very own blog article here: I nearly lost my house.
Out of all of the blog articles I have written this is the one that has had the biggest response. The reason is that I explain my awful situation of having no money, hardly any clients and nearly losing my family home to then having a really successful personal training business in my own 3000 square foot gym
Why does everyone love Before and After photos? They love the dramatic change and transformation. They think to themselves “well if they can do it then so can I”
“How hard can it be?”
The bit that very often gets left out is the hard work that has gone in to achieve that result.
Personally I went days without sleep while trying to build up my business.
We had to shop in budget stores for our food.
We had to come up with excuses to friends about not being able to go out for a meal as we couldn’t afford it.
The situation put enormous strain on our marriage.
I fell ill with a chronic stomach condition and my wife had to take sick leave from her job with Barclays to help out in the business.
We had a high turnover of clients because we didn’t have the right systems in place to keep them.
…..and I could go on.
Trust me, there were (and still are) plenty of ‘down’ days.
BUT
Here’s what has happened as a result of persisting and not giving up.
The struggle is what enables you to grow.
You exercise your ‘problem solving’ muscle in your brain (this is scientifically proven by the way and isn’t just some Ricky theory!)
When those type of problems arise again in the future (they always do), you are better equipped to deal with them, as you have the experience of dealing with them.
This forces you to grow and then take on more challenges.
Here’s another little insight for you:
As you and your business becomes more successful the problems that you encounter also become much larger….but having gone through the growth / problem solving process outlined above, you are in a position to tackle everything head on.
Sometimes when we look from a far at those that we admire and are trying to emulate, we only ever see snippets of the lifestyle that they lead – the nice cars, photos of them flying business class everywhere, or the endless photos of them travelling around the world with their kids – we don’t see the daily problems that they face and deal with.
After all why would we want to emulate someone that has to deal with huge problems every day?
We all get sucked into ‘quick wins’
We all want ‘fast results’
To our bodies and to our businesses.
Learning from The Journey to your destination every single day will set you up for long term success.
Again, you know this already deep down.
Who is going to have the biggest chance of long term success regarding their ideal body composition:
A: lady who had a wedding coming up in 8 weeks so went on a crash diet, restricted calories to 500 per day, did a load of cardio every day and took a load of metabolism crushing tablets
B: lady who has a wedding coming up in 12 months so hired you. Took a patient longer game approach. Made long lasting changes to nutrition through education, exercised 3-4 times per week with both weights and cardio, drank plenty of water, cut down on booze etc.
So, when ‘shit happens’ to you, don’t say:
“why does this always happen to me” and play the victim role. Instead say to yourself:
“why IS this happening to me?” – look at it positively and as an opportunity.
then follow this up with “how can I learn from this?”
These are much better questions to ask yourself as with the right mindset, you will answer them with stuff like:
“so that I can grow as a person and be able to overcome greater challenges ahead”
If you lose 3 clients within the space of a few days….rather than ask
“why does this always happen”
ask
“why IS this happening?” – take responsibility of your business and try to identify a part of your retention programme that needs improving.
If you’re after the quick win, calorie restricting crash diet to your business then go and find someone to help you along the way – there are plenty!
