Part 3: Focus on one big goal at a time.
Personal Trainers Focus On One Thing At A Time:
Early on for me, I set some tough but realistic goals to achieve. Within my first 3 months I wanted to have 50 paying members on an average price of £59 per month. This would bring me in just under £3,000 per month.
Once I was clear on this goal, I then broke it down to a monthly basis and so was aiming for 15 paying members by the end of month 1.
Every resource that I then had was put into helping me achieve this goal. Every decision that I then made had this at the heart of it. When inevitable distractions arose, I would ask myself does this help me achieve my goal at the end of this month? If the answer was yes I would do it, if no then I would note it down with a view that I would revisit another time.
Being able to focus on one thing at a time sounds so simple yet in this social media dominating age is one of the most difficult things to do.
Turn Your Phone Off
How often do you turn your phone off, close down your facebook app and twitter feeds, all of your other web browsers and then just focus on how to achieve that month’s goal?
I was encouraged to do this by my own mentor but would often dismiss it as something that I would not always need to do. “I’m different. I can multi-task!” I’ve now figured out that unlike my Wife, Alex I am not very good at doing this!
As soon as I got into the daily habit of putting aside 90 minutes whereby I locked myself away free from all distractions and then just focused on how I was going to achieve that month’s goals, my productivity increased by at least 500% – no exaggeration.
Online Product
Once my number of clients hit 120, I said that I would take on another trainer and then start to work on my online product – a kettlebell home workout programme for women. I then invested in another mentor that taught me how to set this up. 3 months later my product was released and has now sold copies in UK, USA, Canada, South Africa and Australia.
PT100K Club
I then decided to set up my PT100K Club membership programme that teaches other PT’s around the globe how to use effective marketing strategies to hit their first £100k ($220,00). I then invested in another mentor who taught me how to set up a membership programme. Then I got to work and launched it.
I wanted to do all of the above from day 1, BUT I decided to take it step by step and focus on one big project at a time. When I take on a new big goal, it doesn’t mean that the other facets of my business are dropped or ignored – they just require less of my work and time because systems are in place to keep them growing at a steady pace.
So don’t keep chasing those shiny objects. Don’t get distracted.
DO set aside between 60 and 90 minutes (preferably the same time each day) to focus on achieving your big goal for that month/quarter. Force yourself to create this daily discipline. Turn off all distractions, write down your month’s goal and then all the possible ways that you will achieve it. The get to work.
